I have been able to write reviews from our trip and thought I should write about the full experience. We decided to leave our house before dawn so that we could be at Carlo's Bakery before lines formed. 3:30 a.m. and the alarm is going off and we're stumbling into the car. We drive through Massachusetts, and head in to the Connecticut and New York area. My question is what do these two states have against rest areas or travel stops. Both going to Savannah and coming home we had the hardest time finding a place to stop in this area. Not to mention that this area was also the most expensive for gas. We finally headed underneath the George Washington Bridge and past the USS Intrepid, through the Lincoln Tunnel and into Hoboken, NJ. Parking the car along Washington Street was easy and Carlo's Bakery wasn't consumed with people yet. The bakery has plenty of staff who are friendly and ready to help. Back in the car we head south on I95 again. We decided we may need to educate ourselves with a map again. We were considering stopping in at The Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia until we realized we passed it about an hour before. We didn't make too many stops so that we would be able to arrive by dinner time at Holt Lake Bar-B-Que and Seafood in Smithfield NC. We enjoyed a nice time with great people and back on the road we went. We made out way to our final stop for the night at the Holiday Inn Express in Florence SC. On Friday, we wanted to head right into Savannah GA for a full day of shopping and eating. Pulling in to the Homewood Suites by Marriott Savannah was as easy as we remembered. A big thanks to the friendly staff who had our room ready extra early! Lunch time, let's head into the beautiful Historic District of Savannah. It is amazing driving through all of the different parks along Abercorn Street but you must stop and walk around as well. We park the car near East Bay Street. Walk up through The City Market, stopping for shopping at The Salt Table. Finally, relaxing on the patio at Belford's of Savannah for a leisurely lunch. We weave through the streets from East Broughton Street to East River Street in search of treats and gifts. We visited the Savannah Bee Company, the Paris Market, River Street Sweets, and Fresh Market. We finished off the afternoon with some libations at Rocks on the Roof in The Bohemian Hotel. Continuing our casual weekend, we opted for dinner at Wiley's Championship BBQ. Ending the evening with cupcakes back at our hotel. Saturday, we started the day a little late to ensure our arrival at Sweatman's BBQ would not be too early (opens at 11:30 a.m.). We got our lunch to go and headed for some more shopping at the Pee Dee State Farmers Market. Ooops, unplanned stop for shopping at the South Carolina Cider Company. At this point our car is just about filled to the top with shopping bags, food containers, a case of sweet potatoes, and two cases of peaches. We head for our destination of the Residence Inn Old Keene Mill in Springfield VA. Sunday, we rise early and head north to Philadelphia PA. We quickly find the Reading Terminal Market and park the car in the adjacent garage. Our first stop is at the Termini Bro's Bakery for cookies that my mother requested. Our next stop was at the 4th Street Cookie Company for Cookie Monsters favorite cookies. Finally, we grab lunch at Hershel's Deli. Back through New Jersey, and the zero bathroom area of New York and Connecticut and end up at home with our boys!
